Bus Trip Friday 21 April - Airport Tour

28 People went on our trip to the Brisbane Airport where we did a 1 hour tour around the airport. The tour focused on the current infrastructure projects, expansion plans and general airport operations. We visited the Acacia Street ‘Plane Spotters’ area, the Domestic Terminal precinct, the International Terminal, the freight and logistics precinct and the aircraft maintenance precinct. Did you know the airport covers 3000 acres and the new runway being built will be 3.6Km long. Headed over the Gateway Bridge to have morning tea at Colmslie Recreation Reserve right on the river. After morning tea we headed back over the bridge to TradeCoast Central Heritage Park. Here we looked at the newly opened historical place incorporating three nationally recognised heritage sites. The site is significant as one of the few places surviving from the convict period following an establishment of a colony and a remnant of only seven sites associated with secondary punishment in Australia. It contained a women’s prison in the 1820’s. The site also houses Hangar 7 – representative of the massive wartime infrastructure constructed at Eagle Farm. The Allison Testing Stands site demonstrates the evolution of Queensland’s history, namely the period of rapid mobilization of resources for World War II. By this time we all had seen enough of airports and headed over to the Geebung RSL for a lovely 2 course lunch returning to Redcliffe after lunch.
