Visit to Fort Lytton and TradeCoast Central Heritage Park
On a cool and overcast day 35 members headed off on our bus trip. The first stop was on the other side of the river at Colmslie Recreation Reserve for a nice morning tea beside the river just up from the Gateway Bridge. Then we headed off to Fort Lytton National Park for a guided tour conducted by Queensland Military Historical Society. Checked our some of the large old cannons and the fort itself which was constructed between 1880-82 to protect us from the Russians.
Back on the bus we travelled back over the river to have a very nice lunch at the Trade Coast Hotel. The hotel has been done up very nicely from the old Pinkenba Hotel.
After lunch we checked out the TradeCoast Central Heritage Park. Here in the interpretive centre, we heard about the 3 heritage sites located in the area. The first was the Convict Women’s Prison back in the early 1800s. The next 2 were established during the 2nd WW, Hanger 7 Wartime Secrets where they secretly rebuilt Japanese’s Zero fighter planes. The other site was the Allison Engine Testing centre where they tested the aircraft engines after rebuilding them for US planes. Both places we visited today were very interesting. Arrived back in Redcliffe around 4:30PM. Great day had by all.
